Me vs. Arthritis: Who Will Come Out On Top?

I’ve contemplated blogging about this for quite a while, but didn’t want to come across as a whiner…..but after today’s run I need to vent. I’ve been battling/living with rheumatoid arthritis since I was 12 years old.

If There Were No Consequences....

If you could do any one of the following things without worrying about its effect on your health, which would you choose?

What's On Your List?

There’s a lot of anxiety for me when things don’t get checked off the to-do list - especially when that means the list continues to get longer and longer. I know you can relate as we all often times feel like there’s too much to do and not enough time to do it.
I was recently doing a speaking engagement for a group of Fortune 500 executives in the technology sector and we were talking about how regular exercise improves cognitive performance, focus, energy, and resiliency. One of them raised their hand and asked “I know you travel a lot, so how do you fit regular exercise into your schedule?” My answer was simple…
I recently spent two days speaking at the Yale School of Management to a group of upper level, international executives. They were a bright group but it never fails to surprise me how often brilliant people often overlook one critical thing: expecting great things from one’s self without a thought to taking care of the body and mind that provide and sustain that excellent performance.
Contrary to what we might believe when we sit down to a meal or a snack, a serving size is NOT how much food we’re given or how much comes in a package. One serving of ice cream is a 1/2 cup. Seriously - measure out a 1/2 cup and try to contain your laughter. Who eats just a 1/2 cup of ice cream?! That’s barely enough to get my mouth dirty.

My Secret For Mental Super Powers

For whatever reason I can never get my email inbox to less than 27 messages. When I need to get things done on my computer and be as productive as possible, here’s my trick:
Marketing & branding foods with characters like Dora the Explorer drives preschoolers to choose higher-calorie, less nutritious foods as well as gives them the perception that those foods taste better than ones that don’t have characters on them. Remember when the cigarette industry had to get rid of Joe Camel because it was directed at kids?

Killer New Design

I was working with the amazing designer who created my cards this morning and her son was working on an art project while we were talking. About 10 minutes ago there was a knock on the door - it was her son and he had something in his hands. It was my new box design!
PowerHouse Performance Coaching is proud to announce that we’ll be featured on ShopNBC tomorrow, Monday the 21st, at 7:00 AM and 2:00 PM! I have a new giant zit I’ll be sporting. It’s not on my face, but still, what gives? I feel like I should…

Which Exercise Burns the Most Calories?

This is a viewer question I recently received.  Tune in to NBC KARE 11 Friday the 18th (tomorrow!) during the 10:00 AM hour to learn the answer!  If you can’t tune in, I’ll post the link tomorrow as soon as it’s up. On another note…….
I recently reconnected with a friend from high school and she was laughing about what I do for a living and what my old eating habits used to be:

Why Does It Have to Be Either/Or?

Here’s a quote from the article that makes me feel sick: “If people wanted a diet to be cheap, they went to one supermarket,” said Adam Drewnowski, a University of Washington epidemiology professor who studies obesity and social class. “If they wanted their diet to be healthy, they went to another supermarket and spent more.” WHY SHOULD THIS HAVE TO BE AN EITHER/OR PROPOSITION?

Thanks For That....

Here’s what I saw in one of the hotel fitness centers I used this week. The second to last bullet point: REALLY?!
I landed at the airport today and saw an airport shuttle driver jumping rope by his van at the pick up area. I HAD to go over and check it out. This is Ali….

Raise Your Hand If You're Busy or You Travel

If you travel for work or are super busy, you know how challenging it can be to exercise consistently and eat right. We may not be able to eat the BEST or exercise OPTIMALLY, but there are things we can do with just a little bit of planning - little things add up!

Holy crap I eat a lot of nut mix

As I mentioned in last week’s post, after Steve In A Speedo put his food logs out there for all the world to see, I decided to do the same. One of the most frequent questions clients ask is “What do YOU eat?”. I let them know I’m usually very thoughtful about how and what I eat, but I also don’t get too over the top in that I also eat treats every day.

The Next Breath Is Always Coming

I learn a lot on my yoga mat, my running route and my trapeze rig, and today reminded me just how important my education through exercise is to the rest of my life…
I give nutrition coaching to Super Athlete Steve In a Speedo - tips that can also help you perform better, lose body fat and improve your health. Even if you’re not a super athlete. He was eating pizza and Little Debbie Snow Puffs - stuff I wouldn’t even put in my worm vermicomposter - so you’re probably already a step ahed of him…
It’s no wonder April is National Stress Month - taxes are due, the long winter may have taken a toll on you, or perhaps you’ve shed your cold weather layers only to find your body in a different shape than you last saw it. This month’s KARE 11 Showcase Minnesota Health & Fitness segment provides you with simple strategies to physiologically minimize the stress on your body as well as to increase your overall resiliency to stress.
KICK STRESS WHERE IT COUNTS! I share 9 simple nutrition and exercise strategies to master stress - all while improving your health and fitness.

Score one for the home team...

The other day I was talking to my 9 year-old daughter and made some reference to a Big Mac. She looked at me and said “What’s a Big Mac?”

I'm back

Hello everyone. It may seem like I’ve dropped off the end of the earth, but I haven’t. I was simply traveling to the far ends of it. I’ve been on three different international trips that have occupied 24 of the last 26 days.

Shoulder Exercises from NBC KARE 11 TV Piece

Form and Function….Structurally, the shoulder girdle is one of the most unstable joints in the body due to the fact that it has to allow a large range of motion from lifting to pressing to rotating. Keeping the shoulder muscles strong prevents injury and maintains correct postural alignment. Aesthetically, strong shoulders look good and can create a great optical illusion: broader shoulders make the waist look smaller.

A Test You Can't Pass

I will personally send you $20 if you can pass this test….
Are you putting in the time and energy but still not getting the results you want? Make sure you’re not falling into the following traps:

Leg Exercises From NBC KARE 11 TV Piece

Before we get to the leg exercises I wanted to clear up two important misnomers about them: 1. Squats are bad for your knees and 2. Working inner and outer thighs will reduce fat on the thighs and make them slimmer.

Make Your Own Walking Work Station

My sister-in-law was over the other day and she almost crapped her pants when I told her I had a walking work station. She was thinking I had dropped $4,500 for a brand name one. She was surprised to learn I spent about $20 and 20 minutes. I’ve made a quick tutorial on how you can convert your dusty treadmill into one of the best devices for productivity and health.

Like they need a hole in the head...

We’re standing in line at the video store waiting to pay, (decidedly old school, but we needed something quick) and what do I see?

Smart Snacking on the Go

I know there are a lot of you who travel on a regular basis and may buy into the story that it’s impossible to eat healthy while on the road. I’m flying 2-5 times each month and here’s what I do to snack well while traveling.

Is that MOUSE POOP?!

This gets me EVERY TIME. I walk bleary-eyed into the kitchen to make my morning coffee, see this out of the corner of my eye and freak out. …Until I remember it’s red rice from dinner the night before.
